How to Take a Picture on a Mac: Using Your Keyboards
If you are wondering how to screenshot on Mac desktops, the answer involves some keyboard commands. Using these keyboard commands is also the fastest way to take screenshots. Here are the different ways you can take a screenshot on your Mac desktop:
An Entire Screen
There are two methods for taking screenshots of an entire screen. For the first one, press Command + Shift + 3 simultaneously on your keyboard. This automatically captures an image of everything that is on your screen.
As for the second method, you can press the Command + Shift + 3 + Control keys simultaneously. This, in turn, will save the image directly to your clipboard.

Pressing these keys simultaneously will open a small panel at the bottom of your screen. This panel features different screenshot options you can use. Here, you will notice three screenshot buttons.
Pressing the first button takes an image of the entire screen. The second one captures a screenshot of a particular window. The last one takes a photo of a particular area you selected.
Furthermore, you will see two video-recording buttons. These buttons give you the power to record the screen partially or in full. Clicking the X button on the left-hand side closes the screenshot panel.
Meanwhile, the one on the right-hand side is the Options button. Clicking this button lets you choose where you want to save your image. You can also use this button to set a 5-second or 10-second delay when selecting items you want to take images of.
Using Preview
You can also use your Mac’s default Preview tool to take screenshots. To use this tool, open your Mac’s Finder. On the left-hand side, select Applications.
Double-click Preview and select File on the menu bar. This will open a drop-down menu. Move your mouse to the Take Screenshot option then choose the option that matches the area you want to take an image of.
Through the Grab App
In case memorizing keyboard commands is not your forte, then Grab is your best friend. Grab is an app that lets you capture a Mac screengrab directly from your Mac’s menu bar.
Take note, however, that you cannot find the Grab app if you’re using macOS Catalina. But you can enjoy Grab’s features by pressing Command + Shift + 5 on your keyboard.
To take a screenshot via Grab, open Finder then choose Applications. Double-click the Utilities folder and choose Grab to launch the app.
